Ion exchange refers to the reversible exchange between the exchanger and the exchangeable ions in aqueous solution by using an ion exchanger, resulting in improved water quality without substantial changes in the structure of the ion exchanger.
Anion/cation ion exchanger refer to anion resin exchanger (anion bed) and cation resin exchanger (cation bed) respectively. The anion bed is usually filled with anionic resin, and the cation bed is filled with cation resin.
